Awesome Mulu Caves!

Borneo is an island known for orangutans and other rainforest wildlife but the natural tourist attractions do not stop there. The Mulu caves are a spectacular place you should not miss when in Borneo. These caves hold the world largest natural chamber called the Sarawak chamber. The Deer cave which is part of the Mulu caves is the world’s largest cave passage. The longest cave in Southeast Asia, called the Clear Water cave, is also part of it.

The Mulu caves are considered to be the crowning glory of the Sarawak’s National Park and they also are the largest limestone caves in the world. If you are visiting these attractions in a package tour, you will most likely tour the Deer and Lang caves on the first day. On your second day you will tour the Clear Water and Wind caves.

Your Visit
As you visit the Lang caves, your attention will be caught by the entrance which resembles a pair of oval jaws. The walls are made of ice cream cones, there are small rain forests and clouds, and its ceiling is made of boiling caramel. The Royal Chamber has gilded thrones, imperial poster beds and columns. The Wind Cave does not have elaborate décor but it has a 'king's room' that has chandeliers and candlesticks.

The Clear Water cave has an impressive 107 kilometres of passage, giving it the title of the longest cave in Asia. This cave has a crystalline river whose water is purified as it passes through limestone. This is why it was named the Clear Water cave.

The Deer cave is a world of its own, complete with valleys, hills, forests and plains. Since it has a wide entrance, light shines through giving plants a chance to grow. The size of this cave is almost unimaginable. It would be able to fit 40 Boeing 747 planes inside it, or five St Paul Cathedral's!

You can get to Deer Cave by walking across planks in the jungle. There are also lit paths. Without a doubt one of nature's most awesome spectacles occurs here as the sun sets. You will see over a million bats across the sky as they leave Deer Cave to search for the night's food. There are 12 species of bats that live in this cave which makes it the most diverse bat habitat in the world. Wrinkled-lipped bats are the most common species there. The number of bats flying out makes it look like one continuously moving cloud - a sight truly to behold.
